Stop Preparing. Start Adapting.
The future doesn’t need leaders who are prepared for change. It needs leaders who can continually learn, adapt, and lead through whatever comes next.
What if being “ready” for the future isn’t actually possible?
We often talk about preparing ourselves and our organizations for AI, workforce disruption, new technologies, and other changes ahead. But this article, "There’s No Such Thing as an AI-Ready Culture," from Harvard Business Review (October 2026), argues that readiness is the wrong goal. Instead, leaders need to build the capacity to adapt continually as circumstances change.
That requires more than learning a new skill or checking off a competency. It requires curiosity, self-awareness, critical thinking, reflection, and a willingness to learn from experience. It also requires leaders who can remain effective when they don't have all the answers.
The HLF Connection
This idea gets at something fundamental to how HLF thinks about leadership development: leaders are not finished products. Leadership develops over time through knowledge, experience, reflection, and intentional practice.
That matters because the challenges leaders face will keep changing. A leader who has mastered today's challenges may still struggle with tomorrow's. The more valuable capability may be knowing how to pause, learn, adjust, and try again.
For healthcare leaders, that developmental mindset matters most. Leading in healthcare means operating in an environment where people, pressures, technology, and expectations constantly shift. Developing the capacity to learn and adapt may be more important than preparing for any one specific change.
Reflect
Where have you had to adapt your leadership approach because the situation changed?
What helps you recognize when something that worked before may no longer work?
How do you create space for reflection and learning amid demanding work?
Takeaway: The goal isn't to become a leader who is ready for everything. It's to become a leader who can keep learning when nothing goes as planned.
