Healthcare Leadership Model: An Educational Framework

The Healthcare Leadership Model is a research-informed framework designed to help healthcare professionals develop practical leadership skills in clinical and educational settings.

The original 2017 article introduced the model through a mixed-methods concept mapping process, identifying patient-centeredness as the core principle of healthcare leadership, supported by the competencies of integrity, teamwork, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and selfless service.

A 2026 follow-up reassessed the model for use in undergraduate and graduate medical education. The updated version reframes the model as an educational framework, changes “Selfless Service” to “Service” to better reflect wellness and sustainability, and expands emotional intelligence to include self-awareness, resilience, personal balance, and cultural humility.
