Beyond Awareness: Developing Emotional Intelligence in Healthcare
Emotional intelligence is not simply an inherent leadership trait. It can be intentionally developed. This 2025 systematic review examined 40 studies involving more than 2,300 medical learners and professionals and found evidence that emotional intelligence education can improve individual performance and reduce stress and burnout.
For healthcare leaders, this reinforces an important principle: leadership development requires more than acquiring knowledge. It requires opportunities to practice, reflect, and strengthen the behaviors that shape how we lead.
HLF Connection: HLF incorporates emotional intelligence into a developmental approach that moves from knowledge → experience → reflection → growth.
